Spectral Appearance of Offset Misalignment

I have seen the following statements written regarding the spectral manifestation of horizontal and vertical offset misalignment: If the first three harmonics are distinctive in: 1. The horizontal direction, there is vertical offset misalignment 2. The vertical direction, there is horizontal offset misalignment Why does vertical offset misalignment show up as harmonics in the spectrum taken in the horizontal direction and vice versa? I have seen this (or some variation thereof) written in a few texts and have always wondered why/how this phenomenon occurs.
