http://www.dliengineering.com/section.asp?nID=29 We use a WiFi based data acquisition unit compatible w/ normal sensor types as opposed to putting the transmitter in each sensor. There are alot of benefits to this and the cost (and especially installation costs) are still very low. Distances depend on antennas and the technology is all "off-the-shelf" as far as the wireless part is concerned - which means a solution can be found to meet your needs.
