Dear Jim, I see it as a result of a mixture of two frequencies, a modulation as you write. It can be something unwanted or something natural in the machine in question. Modulation as such is not a wear indicator alone, but with machine knowledge it can raise a warning flag or confirm a known function. As an example, I have seen a 1xmotor speed sideband only on the lower side of a gearmesh to be highly sensitive to alignment between motor and gearbox. In perfect alignment there was a very small sideband, with a still acceptable it was very visible. After replacing unevenly worned rubber blocks in he coupling, also the sideband disappeared. I consider sidebands as a messenger of information. Often with different meaning in each case. Regards Arne
