If the jorunal is an anti friction ball or roller bearing, I am very sure it gives early warnings. If the jorunals a traditional sleeve bearings the situation is difficult. An overloaded sleeve bearing reacts in several ways. Primarily, the oil film is not built properly when the oil is drained away through cracks. That causes debris in the return oil, more friction, hence raised temperature and finally friction that can be from a rub in first the sleeve bearing itself but also the oil seals around it. I guess you have many bearings and one early breakdown damage warnign that I know sleeve bearing people use is a simple micro switch placed so that when the bearing is worned out of tolerance, the switch simply closed and gives a warning to the control room. Most have them all in series and a warning breakes the line and the operator must find the breaker himself. Regards Arne
