I've experienced a couple of rolls in steel strip coating lines which have cracked in the manner described. The rolls were both approx 800mm diameter and 2000mm barrel length, turning at less than 150rpm. Readings in both displacement and velocity gave a very high noise floor, superimposed with running speed harmonics. There was also a very audible thumping noise at 1x rpm. Something was very obviously wrong, but the production guys needed to know if they needed to change a bearing or the whole roll. The rolls were inside a tank, with just the journals and bearings exposed.
