SPM is a way to quantify the same as other broadband acceleration methods use. They all depend on a present fault that can produce a high frequency noise. It can only react on such noise, from for instance dirt, wear, corrosion in an antifriction bearing or react on cavitation. But cannot explain which of the faults is present. And all the other world of diagnostics, just to mention a few - unbalance, misalgnment, wrong operating point for a pump and so on, it offers no help at all. I use broadband acceleration as a support to the normal methods, but never alone. A nearby papermill where I live used SPM until they learned the spectrum and stopped using spm already 1987. If I have a free choice, I would never start. Spectra and where they are taken and vectors offer such a full amount of proactive tools. It is not favourable to start using a method that just indicates that a ball bearing is wrong or that a pump cavitates or there is a rub present and cannot tell which. Did I answer your question? I am sure SPM will now start arguing how wrong I am, but as I said, acceleration is a good support. Hopefully some lurkers can also expand on this. The practical problems applying SPM limits the monitoring too much. It is simply too cumbersome.
