Our company has eight standby genrators , 11MW units. Rolls Royce (RR) Avons- gas generator, GEC power turbine, gearbox and GE Canada generator.
The Avons run at over 6500 rpm (108 Hz). There are high and low pass filters in the built-in monitoring system to monitor vibration levels between 40 to 350Hz. There are alarms and a high vibration trip operating off this monitor We routinely take portable readings using Entek Datapacs.
Clearly, RRs recommendation is concerned about the low end of the spectra up to approximately 3X running speed. The AVONS being aeroderivitive have three anti friction bearings, a front at the compressor, thrust bearing at the middle and another at the end I was interested to know if any endusers of AVONs of other aeroderivitives are monitoring vibration for bearing defects?
